I was talking with a woman the other day about what it meant to have career freedom.
We both agreed that for us, freedom meant:
- Choosing when to work
- Choosing how to work
- And choosing who to work with
Those three things gave us the freedom to be in an environment where we felt respected and appreciated.
The problem is, those things aren’t just handed to you in a job… so how do you get them? How do you define what career freedom means to you?
Find out in the video below.
I didn’t always have the freedom that I have now.
One of the biggest examples of that was when I found out I was being paid $15,000 dollars less per year than the men they hired.
I wasn’t treated with respect, I wasn’t appreciated, and my work wasn’t valued even though I had the same skills and credentials that the others did.
That company ended up firing me, and it turned out to be the best thing they could’ve ever done for me.
I never would’ve been paid what I deserved, gotten the career freedom I wanted, or felt fulfilled while I was in a position where I wasn’t appreciated or wanted.
The problem with situations like that is that if we aren’t respected and appreciated, we’ll never be able to get the freedom that we want, to live the lives we dream about.
If you feel like you’re in a similar situation, I have an exercise for you:
Make a list, and carry it with you throughout the day. Write down everything that makes you smile, makes you happy, and that makes you feel like you could do it for the rest of your life.
Now, I want you to create a second list. In this list, write down all of the skills that you have to offer. Think beyond just academic or technical skills, and think about your soft skills as well.
Are you a good listener? Are you great at strategizing and finding opportunities that others don’t see? Are you good at communicating and explaining things?
Think about anything and everything that you’re good at.
Once you’re done with both lists, start combining them.
Look at everything you wrote down that made you happy during the day, and see what skills you have that line up with it.
When you find something that makes you feel happy, fulfilled, and you can earn a living doing it, that’s the key to finding career freedom.
