“The greatest end to life is action, not knowledge.” – Thomas Huxley

All the knowledge in the world without action is useless. Even if we know everything, without action, we’ll never achieve our goals.

We’re going through the process of learning about ourselves, determining what our goals are, and creating a plan to reach those goals; but in the end, we still have to take action.

Whether you don’t know where to start or you’re trying to do too much too quickly, a lot of people get stuck as they attempt the first step.

I had a client recently who said she wanted to reach a particular goal in her company. It was a fantastic end goal to have, and she was more than capable of accomplishing it. However, it was a huge step from where she was at the time. She needed to break her end goal down into smaller pieces and create a step-by-step plan to follow.

One of the best ideas I’ve ever heard was from Brian Tracy: Imagine the goal you want to achieve and go to the top of that mountain. Turn around, look down, and ask yourself, “What was the last step I took before I achieved this?”

“What was the step before that?”

“And the step before that?”

Once you see everything in little increments, it all starts to seem plausible. It seems logical. It feels doable. You feel capable and invigorated by it.

Take those small steps and put them in your plan of action with a date for their accomplishment, just like you did for your end goals.

For example, let’s say that your end goal is to achieve something by the end of the year. You might start with your first action step being completed in the next couple of days, and the next in a couple of weeks, and the next in a couple of months.

Step by step you will be moving closer and closer to your end goal, sometimes without even realizing it. That’s the beauty of the goal-setting process. Creating smaller steps that are easier to accomplish will show you exactly what you need to do, when to do it, and what to do next. You prove to yourself that you’re truly capable of doing anything you put your mind to.
